Daedalic Entertainment: After the failure of Gollum, the publisher stops development and halts production of the next Lord of the Rings game

The bitter critical failure of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will leave traces. After apologizing for the difficult to accept quality of the stealth game he developed internally, Daedalic Entertainment has made a heavy decision: he will stop developing video games to focus on what he does best, publishing.

The news was entrusted to the German media Games Wirtschaft and unfortunately comes with dismissal of 25 of the 90 employees of the Hamburg-based company. Daedalic announces that it wants to do everything possible to help them find a job with its partners. The press release specifies that this is a “difficult turning point”, but which must also be considered as “a new beginning in the long history of Daedalic Entertainment”, which had nevertheless conceived productions appreciated as State of MindTHE Deponia Or The Pillars of the Earth. He will now concentrate on the licenses of his partners, he who has published titles like Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, The Suicide of Rachel Foster Or Torchlight II.

We value every member of our team very much and it is important to us that the transition goes as smoothly as possible. Therefore, we will help our former employees to find new opportunities within our network.

Another consequence of this closure of the branch dedicated to development: the new game The Lord of the Rings on which Daedalic had been working since mid-2022 and which had to focus on a character who had never had his own video game adventure before is paused. We do not yet know if its production will be transferred to a third-party studio, will be switched to Embrace Group who now owns Middle-earth Enterprises, or will simply be cancelled. If the adventure does not scare you, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is available from €34.90 on Amazon.co.uk.
