Dailymotion is getting a makeover and hopes to reach one billion users within 3 years

Dailymotion, the French video hosting platform owned by Vivendi, has announced plans to overhaul its platform and attract new users to better compete with YouTube and TikTok.

The shareholder history of Dailymotion has been turbulent to say the least: intervention by the French State to prevent a sale abroad, takeover by Orange to recapitalize the company and acquired by Vivendi in 2015. After several years in the shadows, the platform now wants to regain its place in the very competitive world of online video.

Today, less than a quarter of its 400 million monthly users assets are accessing the live site, i.e. 75% of Dailymotion videos are viewed outside the platform, whether on other websites or on social networks. Despite these figures very far from those of YouTube, Dailymotion has set itself a very ambitious objective, since it aims to reach the milestone of one billion users by 2026.

Dailymotion wants to almost triple its number of users in three years

To reach one billion users, the French platform relies above all on creators. Dailymotion is currently looking for content creators with whom it will share advertising revenue. The platform has already selected 200 creators and aims to attract more than 5,000 by the end of 2024.. These creators will bring a “ point of view on the world through their decryptions “, according to COO Guillaume Clément, and will offer users different angles on various subjects.

The Dailymotion algorithm will then analyze the “sentiment score” of the videos to recommend complementary or contradictory content. The platform is also updating its mobile application with new features such as “React”, user comments in video format, or polls, which will allow you to strengthen interactions and reinforce the feeling of participating in a debate.

With the rise of short-form video platforms such as TikTok and the continued dominance of YouTube, Dailymotion has its work cut out for it. For the occasion, the platform has had a makeover, since it now benefits from a new design in order to attract a new generation of users. The platform, in particular a more vertical format, and thus blends into the mass of other applications offering the same thing.
