Daimler: Cooperation in battery recycling

(CercleFinance.com) – The Australian Neometals announced on Friday that its technological joint venture Primobius had concluded a cooperation agreement with Mercedes-Benz regarding the recycling of batteries.

This long-term collaboration must in particular relate to research and development (R&D) activities aimed at making it possible to recycle new generation cells.

The partnership also provides for a license agreement covering the training of personnel, engineering and management of the facilities of the future Mercedes plant dedicated to battery recycling.

During the operational development phase of the site, the German car manufacturer planned to test the deployment, at an industrial level, of the recycling technology developed by Primobius.

Primobius has pioneered a process to recover materials such as lithium, nickel and cobalt from used lithium-ion (LiB) batteries, which it then reintegrates into the supply chain of the battery manufacturing.

Last March, the company was selected as a technology partner for the future Mercedes-Benz battery recycling plant, an agreement which includes preliminary studies for the project.

The start of production at this plant, which is to be built in southern Germany, is scheduled for next year.
