Daisy Ridley is set to reprise her role as Rey in an upcoming Star Wars film, following an announcement last spring. The plot will unfold 15 years after the events of “Skywalker’s Ascension,” with Rey striving to establish a New Jedi Order amidst chaos. Although screenwriter Steven Knight has exited the project, Lucasfilm is in search of new writers. The film is slated for release on May 20, 2026, while two additional films were also announced at the Star Wars Celebration.
Daisy Ridley, known for her role as Rey in the recent Star Wars trilogy, is set to return in an upcoming film!
This exciting development was revealed last spring at the Star Wars Celebration in London. While not much has emerged since then, a recent comment from Ridley is raising questions about the future of the franchise.
Is Rey’s return limited to a single movie, or could this be the beginning of a new series?
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ridley shared her “fear” regarding reprising her iconic role five years after her last appearance. She mentioned, “it will be interesting to meet up again with a character I know so well.”
She elaborated, stating, “I’m feeling that the new/new will be very intriguing. A lot has changed for me personally, so revisiting this character at such a different time is both exciting and a bit daunting.
As for the film’s narrative, it is set to unfold after the defeat of the First Order. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy explained at the Star Wars Celebration that “The Jedi are in chaos — there’s even a question of how many are left — and Rey is working to establish the New Jedi Order based on texts from Luke.”
The story will take place 15 years following the events of Skywalker’s Ascension, focusing on Rey’s mission to revitalize the Jedi order alongside two padawans—a boy and a girl, with the latter showcasing remarkable abilities.
This new installment will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, known for her work on Ms. Marvel.
It’s worth noting that screenwriter Steven Knight has stepped away from the project, as reported over the weekend. Knight had previously signed on to replace original writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, gaining recognition as the creator of the acclaimed series Peaky Blinders.
Seeking New Screenwriters?
Currently, Lucasfilm is reportedly in talks with potential new screenwriters to continue the story of Rey’s quest to build a new Jedi Academy. This delay may push production start dates to 2025, with the film scheduled for release on May 20, 2026.
Additionally, two other Star Wars films were announced at the same event. James Mangold, known for directing Logan and Indiana Jones 5, will explore the origins of the first Jedi, set 25,000 years in the past.
The second film will be helmed by Dave Filoni, a veteran of the franchise renowned for his contributions to The Mandalorian. This narrative will unfold during the New Republic, established after the Rebel Alliance triumphed at the Battle of Endor, leading to the fall of the Second Death Star and Emperor Palpatine’s disappearance.
While we await news on who will take over from Steven Knight, fans can catch up on the entire Star Wars saga available on Disney+.
