While leading the group The Republicans in the National Assembly since 2019, Damien Abad was appointed Minister of Solidarity, Autonomy and Disability on Friday May 20, 2022 in the new government. A position that is particularly close to the heart of the man from Nîmes, who himself suffers from a rare disease.
Indeed, Damien Abad is congenital arthrogryposis. The latter causes in particular a stiffness in the joints, which limits the movements of the affected person. In total, arthrogryposis includes more than 300 different pathologies. In 2020, the first MP with a disability had entrusted to Release : “It is a very rare disease. It can affect one member, two or more: for me, it was all four. I was lucky that it was a non-evolving form, and to be operated on early by a great teacher. Then I had a lot of rehabilitation. Others than me don’t work“.
Damien Abad campaigns for the inclusion of people with disabilities
Damien Abad’s handicap has always pushed him to surpass himself. The man who became a hard worker always wanted to remain optimistic and put all the chances on his side. In January 2020, he had also declared to the Parisian : “I have always made sure that it is neither a brake nor a motor in politics“.
Recently, Damien Abad had been talked about by reacting to controversial remarks byEric Zemmour who wanted to separate children with disabilities from the rest of society. For all the families who fight daily for the integration of their children, it’s a stab […] Suffering does not come from inclusion: it comes from isolation and lack of integration” he explained. With his appointment as minister, the politician should be able to continue to advocate for inclusion people with disabilities.
