  • In Germany there is a nationwide ban on dancing on Good Friday.
  • There is now a new regulation regarding the dance ban for Hamburg.

Easter is considered the most important festival in Christianity and is dedicated to the death and suffering of Jesus Christ. For this reason, Good Friday is also considered a so-called silent holiday. Public dance and music events are therefore viewed as inappropriate and there is a nationwide ban on dancing on Good Friday, although this is increasingly being questioned. According to surveys, one in two people are in favor of easing the ban on dancing.

Hamburg relaxes ban on dancing

The Hamburg Senate has now taken the first step and, in coordination with the Protestant and Catholic Churches, has announced new regulations on the ban on dancing on Good Friday. As a result, the holiday rest in the port city only applies on Good Friday from 5 a.m. and ends at midnight. Previously, dancing was prohibited from 2 a.m. on Good Friday to 2 a.m. on Holy Saturday. The new regulation will apply from this year.

The government factions SPD and Greens justified the decision by saying that this was a good and timely step. However, due to the partial relaxation, Good Friday will continue to be protected as a quiet holiday, it is said.

In addition to the ban on dancing, there is also a ban on films at Easter, so certain films are not allowed to be broadcast on television or in cinemas.
