Dangerous Courage – Graz: Customers overwhelm robbers in the supermarket

A 49-year-old man wanted to attack a supermarket in Graz on Friday afternoon armed with a knife – but failed due to courageous witnesses. The customers overwhelmed the man from Graz, he was arrested and is in custody.

After this shock experience, the cashier had to be looked after by the crisis intervention center: It was on Friday, shortly before 1:30 p.m., when a masked man suddenly stood in front of her in a supermarket in Sparbersbachgasse in Graz! The face covered by a wool hood with slits – and the perpetrator had a knife in his hand with which he threatened the 20-year-old. “Money here, money here,” he demanded in Styrian dialect. But the young woman couldn’t open the cash register – that’s not possible without a payment transaction – and fled to a back sales area where a colleague was. The 36-year-old hurried forward, and there the man was still standing with the drawn knife. Put in a headlock But nobody had counted on two extremely courageous customers: the two sneaked up on the perpetrator from behind, used the surprise effect and took him in the “headlock”. As a result, they managed, together with the employee, to wrestle the man to the ground, take the knife away from him and fix him until the police arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect Luckily everything turned out so that no one was injured. But the police also find warning words: “We are pleased about civil courage and the vigilance of the population,” says spokesman Christoph Grill. “But please always act carefully and thoughtfully. It’s better to call the police.”Money as a motiveThe suspect is a previously blameless 49-year-old, as a motive he gave his “precarious financial situation”. The murder weapon was a pointed kitchen knife.
