The popular messenger WhatsApp offers many functions, but you shouldn’t use all of them because you can sometimes risk that your private chats are less secure than before.

This is exactly the scenario you face if you export your WhatsApp chats to the Telegram messenger, reports the business portal Forbes. The problem: While WhatsApp always offers end-to-end encryption without having to set anything, this is different with Telegram.

You only get end-to-end encryption there if you set it manually for chats with another person. This feature is called “Secure Chat”. The security method is not offered for group chats at all.

Kaspersky, a security software provider, therefore doubts the security of Telegram. The messenger is more insecure than many people believe. “Telegram does not automatically use end-to-end encryption. And the messenger does not inform users about the ‘Secure Chat’ function,” the company writes.

According to Kaspersky, every modern messenger should offer encrypted data exchange. End-to-end encryption ensures that the message is encrypted by the sender and only decrypted by the recipient. The messenger itself has no insight into the message and the chat is also protected from other curious people. So refrain from exporting your chats from WhatsApp to Telegram.

EU law makes security more difficult

A new EU law stipulates that WhatsApp must be interoperable with other messengers, but security experts are also skeptical here.
