Darmstadt drops out of the top three
Fortuna’s new annoys Schalke immediately

In the fourth competitive game of the year, Fortuna Düsseldorf finally scores their first goal – and the new coach Thioune can also celebrate a win. This is bad news for second division top club Schalke. After all, the direct competitor Darmstadt also makes a mistake.

Fortuna Dusseldorf – FC Schalke 04 2: 1 (0: 1)

Schalke 04 lost valuable ground in the promotion race of the 2nd Bundesliga. After a poor performance at Fortuna Düsseldorf, the relegated team lost 2-1 (1-0) and is now four points behind a direct promotion place. Blendi Idrizi (42′) gave the disappointing Royal Blues the lead, but Khaled Narey (47′) and Rouwen Hennings (56′) turned the game in favor of the hosts when coach Daniel Thioune made a successful debut.

It was five days after the separation from coach Christian Preusser that the Rhinelanders scored their first goals in the second half of the season. Despite the first win after four defeats in a row, Düsseldorf remain in relegation place 16. Fortuna did not play like a basement child in front of 10,000 spectators – on the contrary. The hosts put Schalke on the defensive and were unlucky when Daniel Ginczek headed the post (9th).

The Thioune team also dominated in the episode, Schalke lost the ball numerous times and didn’t play offensively at all for 40 minutes. Narey (37th) missed the second big opportunity for Düsseldorf to take the lead. The guests punished this coldly. At the end of their first good attack, Idrizi scored an undeserved lead at the break.

The lead gave Schalke no security. Ex-Düsseldorfer Marcin Kaminski made a mistake right after the change, Narey took the ball from him and scored to equalize. After losing the ball again in the Schalke defense, Hennings missed the great opportunity to take the lead (52′), four minutes later the scorer did better. As a result, both teams had good chances.

Hanover 96 – SV Darmstadt 98 2: 2 (1: 1)

Darmstadt 98 had to accept the next setback in the fight for promotion. A week after the swatter against Hamburger SV (0:5), the lilies had to be content with a 2:2 (1:1) draw at Hannover 96 and slipped out of the promotion places that matchday. The Darmstadt team had a hard time without coach Torsten Lieberknecht, who tested positive for the corona virus and was represented by his assistant Kai Peter Schmitz. The Lilies failed to regain the championship lead after the victories of the competition.

After Sebastian Stolze’s own goal (18th), the Hessians carelessly gave up their lead. Cedric Teuchert (35th) and Julian Börner (50th) turned the game around before Darmstadt’s Aaron Seydel (62nd, according to video evidence) equalized. In the open game there was no big difference in the table, Darmstadt had big problems with the committed performance of the Hanoverians. In the final phase, an open exchange of blows developed with chances for both sides – Hannover’s Niklas Hult hit the post (69th).

In addition, referee Felix Zwayer celebrated his comeback in the game after a break of around two months. The 40-year-old took a break after public hostilities as a result of the Bundesliga top game between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich (2: 3) at the beginning of December. He had also thought about a possible career end.

FC Ingolstadt – SV Sandhausen 0:0

Bottom light FC Ingolstadt missed the chance to give up the red lantern for the first time in four months. A week after the furious 5:0 at 1. FC Nürnberg, the Schanzer did not manage to get beyond a meager 0:0 in the basement duel against SV Sandhausen. For Sandhausen it was another important point in the relegation battle after the last two wins. The pressure is increasing on the FCI before the two difficult tasks at Werder Bremen and against St. Pauli. Sandhausen is challenged against Hamburg and Heidenheim.

In a chaotic game with a lot of struggle before the break, Ingolstadt didn’t create any significant chances. Sandhausen was more determined, also in the duels, and could have taken the lead through Cebio Soukou, Tom Trybull and Dennis Diekmeier. But FCI keeper Dejan Stojanovic was on his toes.

Even after the change, a lot of effort and many duels characterized the hectic duel between the two relegation candidates. Opportunities? in short supply. Ingolstadt survived the final phase outnumbered after a yellow-red card against Hans Nunoo Sarpei (72nd).
