Irish data protection officers have fined the video service Tiktok, operated by a Chinese company, €345 million. The Irish data protection authority had investigated how Tiktok handles the user data of minors. In particular, this was about default settings and age verification when registering.

A default setting, for example, made posts, including videos, from users between the ages of 12 and 17 visible to everyone by default. In addition, the comment function in these profiles was accessible to all users in advance.

That’s what Tiktok says about it

The results of the investigation would primarily relate to attitudes that were valid three years ago, according to Tiktok’s reaction. “Most of these results are no longer relevant due to measures we introduced before the investigation began.” This means that all accounts of users under the age of 16 are set to private by default.

In addition to the penalty, Tiktok was also asked to bring data processing into line with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) within three months. A record fine under the GDPR of 1.2 million euros was already imposed on the Facebook group Meta in May.
