A misadventure that sends shivers down your spine. In the United States, doctors in Arkansas have made an astonishing and repulsive discovery in the ear of a 2-year-old girl. It all started when little Averie started complaining of itchy ears. His mother, Jessica DeLoach, who was giving him the bath, then had a bad surprise by checking his ear canal. “It looked like she had put food inside her ear,” remembers the Arkansasaise mother in the columns of PEOPLE.

Convinced that she saw something in her daughter’s ear, Jessica decided to take her to the pediatrician. She was then far from suspecting what the doctor was going to discover. “The extraction procedure was traumatic since you are asked to hold your child still to extract the objects without risk, explains the mother. 2 year old doesn’t understand what the doctor is trying to do.” And the extraction itself was nothing scary compared to what the pediatrician extracted from little Averie’s ear: two huge ticks well lodged inside the ear canal. I had no idea it was ticks at all until the doctor removed them“, says the young mother, who shared a photo of the parasites on the social network TikTok.

“It happens more often than you think”

It turned out that little Averie had been bitten while walking in a wooded area around the family’s new home. Fortunately, she does not suffer from any side effects today. “I am happy that she has no sequelae, confides his mother. Other parents told me of having had similar experiences. (…) I discovered that it happens much more often than one would imagine.”

Note that in North America, Europe, Asia and North Africa, tick bites can be vectors of potentially serious diseases. Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Tularemia, Anaplasmosis and Powassan virus are among the best known. It is therefore recommended to be wary of it and to control your skin after a walk in wooded or humid areas.
