Rocker life has not left Dave Grohl untouched. The Foo Fighters star reveals he’s almost gone deaf.

Dave Grohl (52) has been on the stages of this world for more than 30 years. Early in his career as a drummer for Scream and Nirvana, later as a singer and guitarist for his Foo Fighters. That left traces as he revealed in an interview with radio legend Howard Stern (68).: “I’m damn deaf.” In the last 20 years he has even concentrated on reading lips because he can hardly hear anything anymore.

“I haven’t had my ears tested for a long time. I know what the doctors say: ‘You have hearing loss,'” explains Grohl. He has had tinnitus in his right ear for a long time and an even worse one in his left. For example, it is difficult for him to understand other people in public places with background noise. Especially during the corona pandemic, the mask requirement was a real challenge for him because he could no longer see his lips.

Dave Grohl doesn’t want in-ear monitors

If someone were sitting next to him in a full restaurant, he couldn’t understand a single word either. Grohl always says, “I’m a rock musician. I’m damn deaf. I can’t hear what you’re saying.” However, this would not hinder him in his work. In the studio he is still able to filter out “small things” like cymbals that are too bright or instruments that are out of tune when he mixes his songs. His ears are tuned to certain frequencies

Many of his colleagues wear so-called in-ear monitors in studios or at concerts. These special headphones are easy on the ear and should still deliver a perfect sound. Grohl tested this, but these devices are out of the question for him. Especially not during live performances: “I want to hear the audience in front of me.” He also wanted to perceive the “natural sound atmosphere” and his bandmates. An in-ear monitor would also mess up his spatial understanding. Then he no longer knew where he was on stage.
