A painting by David Bowie is up for auction. With a special story: It was discovered in a donation center for housewares.

A woman in South River, Ontario, Canada, discovered a painting by pop star David Bowie (1947-2016) at a housewares donation center. She bought it for five Canadian dollars – the equivalent of around 3.40 euros. Now the painting is being auctioned for tens of thousands of dollars.

How the auction house “Cowley Abbott” writes about the auction, the discoverer was amazed when she discovered the signature of the musician, who died in 2016, on the back of the 20 by 25 centimeter painting. After thorough research, a Bowie expert from Great Britain confirmed the authenticity of the work of art.

Number 46

Between 1995 and 1997 Bowie painted 47 paintings on canvas under the title “Dead Heads”. He portrayed band members, friends and acquaintances. But there are also some self-portraits among them. The painting now up for auction bears the number 46.

The auction ends on July 24th. The last bid is currently (June 18) at 50,100 dollars – the equivalent of around 42,000 euros.
