Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Robert Downey Jr.
Two debutants win supporting actor Oscars
Da’Vine Joy Randolph and now Robert Downey Jr. are this year’s winners in the two supporting actor categories at the Oscars.
Traditionally, the awarding of the supporting actor Oscars is one of the first official acts of the Academy Awards – the 96th edition on the night of March 11th was no exception. The evening opened with the award ceremony in the “Best Supporting Actress” category. The first special feature: five former winners of this award, including last year’s winner Jamie Lee Curtis (65), presented the five nominated stars.
“Best Supporting Actress” – The other nominees
Emily Blunt – “Oppenheimer”
Danielle Brooks – “The Color Purple”
America Ferrera – “Barbie”
Jodie Foster – “Nyad”
On the third attempt: Robert Downey Jr. has his Oscar
When it came to the announcement, the Academy also relied on fivefold appeal for the male supporting actors. In addition to the main presenter Ke Huy Quan (52), there was also Christoph Waltz (67), who gave a hymn of praise to Ryan Gosling (43) and his portrayal of Ken.
While Da’Vine Joy Randolph tearfully thanked God at the beginning of the evening, things got entertaining for her male counterpart: On the third attempt, Robert Downey Jr. (58) won his first golden boy for his performance in “Oppenheimer” and began his speech in the best possible way Tony Star style with: “I want to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy – in that order.” But the biggest thanks go to his wife, who nursed him back to life with her love and now to winning an Academy Award.
