Day of German Unity: Stars remember the reunification on social media

The Day of German Unity will be celebrated for the 30th time on October 3rd. So the celebrities remember the anniversary of the reunification.

Today, October 3rd, Germany celebrates 30 years of reunification. The Day of German Unity commemorates the "coming into effect of the accession of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) to the Federal Republic of Germany". Some stars also think back to it on social media.

Actress Nora Tschirner (39, "Keinohrhasen") has a very special photo on German Unity Day. She posted a picture on Instagram on which David Hasselhoff (68) put an arm around the 39-year-old. "Also say 'thank you'" is her comment on the snapshot – including a kiss smiley and a heart emoji. Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, David Hasselhoff performed his hit "Looking for Freedom" (1989) at the New Year's Eve party at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Since then, the song has been inextricably linked with the reunification – apparently also for Tschirner.

Stars are thoughtful

The German all-round talent Michael "Bully" Herbig (52, "Der Schuh des Manitu") wishes a "Happy German Unity" on his official Instagram account. "And where were you when the Wall came down in 1989?" Asks the successful director of his followers. Herbig also posts an old photo of himself in a Bundeswehr uniform sitting on a jeep. "Well, I was sitting peacefully on the bonnet," jokes the 52-year-old.

There are more pensive tones from singer Annett Louisan (43, "The Feeling"), who was born in the former GDR. She posted an old class photo in black and white on Instagram. "When I look at these pictures, I get longing," she writes. Not according to the GDR, however, "but according to this particular form of freedom that childhood gives you". Because "the older I would have become in the GDR, the more freedom I would have lost, which is so precious and which I can enjoy today." She is very grateful for that.

"Congratulations! We still haven't got a straight one in uniting. But we're working on it!" Writes moderator Ruth Moschner (44) to a selfie. "I'm just glad that this beautiful … wall is gone! Friends, work, love, vacation, we can enjoy everything without limits," the post said. Currently there are restrictions, but in the past one would have had to struggle with borders, war, a lack of freedom of expression and a lack of career choice. "As a Südi, I made my way over to Berlin in 1997 and never regretted this step!" The moderator also says.

Sweet children's pictures for the holiday

How did Johannes Strate (40) experience October 3, 1990? The front singer of the band Revolverhelden reveals that to his fans on Instagram. "The television is on without a break and my parents have tears in their eyes," says Strate, describing the emotional moment and posting a picture of the child. "I'm ten and I can tell from their reactions that great things are happening." In addition to the hashtag #reunion, he provided the snapshot with a heart emoji.

There is also a cute children's photo of actress Karoline Schuch (38, "Ballon") on Instagram. With a pink jacket and short hair, little Schuch looks into the camera. "1990 was reunification and I still know one thing from that year pretty well," writes the 38-year-old. "My father was never allowed to cut my hair again after this photo."

Actor Kida Khodr Ramadan (43, "4 blocks") also commemorates the special day in German history on Instagram. "30 years of diversity and creativity" is his comment. The actor was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1976. Shortly after his birth, the family emigrated to Germany and has lived in West Berlin ever since.
