One month after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, three summits are being held today in Brussels: those of NATO, the G7 and the European Union. The special envoy of Europe 1 on the spot explains the objectives of these crucial meetings.

The war in Ukraine on the menu of three summits today in Brussels: NATO, the G7 and the European Union. According to the White House, the purpose of these meetings is to consolidate the arsenal of sanctions already taken, in order to avoid attempts to circumvent Moscow, and to strengthen NATO’s position in Eastern Europe over the long term. US President Joe Biden arrived in the Belgian capital last night to participate in these meetings. Capital appointments, but what are the stakes exactly?

For the members of NATO, it is a question of displaying a face of unity and firmness. Objective: to coordinate and reinforce the contingents of military forces within the countries of the Alliance located in Eastern Europe. An issue of coordination also between the members of the G7, around the issues of supplying military equipment to Ukraine and economic and humanitarian support.

Macron calls for solidarity

Food safety is also on the agenda, as Emmanuel Macron pointed out last night before taking off for Brussels. “Countries like Egypt, which is very dependent, or countries in the Near and Middle East, are faced with this challenge,” assured the president. “This is why France is going to carry out an international solidarity initiative to, from now on, use all available stocks”, he continued. “Some have stocks, like China: they must be used to produce more and provide solidarity to countries that need it to avoid these weaknesses.”

Finally, during the European Council, the question of controlling energy prices will be debated. France is pleading for the Twenty-Seven to agree on a ceiling price. More generally, the European Union has no plans to announce new sanctions against Russia during these two days.
