DAZN shows the women’s football championship in full: fewer games for free on ARD and ZDF?

DAZN will broadcast all games of the women’s European Football Championship in summer 2022. Now the question arises whether the agreement with ARD and ZDF means less free live football.

  • DAZN has secured the streaming rights for the entire 2022 women’s European Football Championship.
  • From July 6th, all games can be seen live on DAZN in the live stream.
  • Whether ARD and ZDF can now also show all games is not entirely clear at the moment.

Women’s football is still very popular: DAZN will therefore show all matches of the EM 2022 from England in the live stream. The streaming service announced this after reaching an agreement with ARD, ZDF and the football association UEFA.

Despite the men’s winter World Cup, this means a packed football summer for DAZN customers: the men’s World Cup playoffs before the World Cup in Qatar and the Nations League will also be shown on DAZN in June and July.

What happens to the live streams from ARD and ZDF?

In addition to all live games of the Women’s European Championship, which is taking place in England for the second time since 2005, DAZN wants to provide highlight clips five minutes after each game. A total of 31 games are scheduled before the final on July 31 at Wembley Stadium.

It is not entirely clear at this point in time to what extent the rights agreement between the public broadcasters and DAZN will affect the online distribution of the EM games on the online platforms of ARD and ZDF.

It remains to be seen whether and which games in Germany can be seen exclusively on DAZN and therefore not for free. So far, ARD and ZDF have promised to show all games live on TV and online.

Women’s EM: Germany against Spain, Finland and Denmark

What is certain, however, is that all games with German participation will be broadcast live on free TV by the original rights holders of ARD and ZDF. Accordingly, the number of encounters to be seen there may also depend on the performance of the German team.

Under the leadership of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, the German players have to play against their neighbors from Denmark for the first time on July 8th at 9 p.m. and take on Spain and Finland in the other group games.
