DC: Does the Blue Beetle post-credits scene announce a sequel?

“Blue Beetle” being a DC film, therefore of superheroes, it is advisable to remain seated during the credits or risk missing an additional scene – WARNING SPOILERS !!!

WARNING – The article below contains spoilers insofar as it discusses the post-credits scene of “Blue Beetle”. Please move on if you haven’t seen it yet.

Is it still necessary to specify that going to see a superhero movie implies staying until the end of the credits, under penalty of missing one or two additional scene(s)? Ever since Iron Man made it a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008, it’s become a comic book movie staple. And even the vast majority of current blockbusters.

Released this Wednesday, August 16 in our theaters, Blue Beetle is no exception. From the DC catalog, which the character joined in the heart of the 80s after the bankruptcy of his two previous publishers, the feature film is the first to be released in cinemas with a Latino superhero as the headliner.

Xolo Mariduena

Either Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña), third iteration of the hero after Dan Garret and Ted Kord, both mentioned in the feature film by Angel Manuel Soto. Which therefore contains a scene at the very beginning of its end credits. The content of which can be guessed well before the credits begin.

WHAT DOES THE POST-CREDITS SCENE CONTAIN?

If Jaime Reyes is the protagonist of the story, the shadow of Ted Kord hangs over the film. Because the villain (Susan Sarandon) is none other than his sister and the hero falls in love with his daughter Jenny (Bruna Marquezine). Who, in a sequence, evokes the death of his mother and the fact that his father left but never returned. A sentence which, inevitably, intrigues and suggests that the post-generic scene will reconsider its fate.

And it is: we find ourselves in his (abandoned) mansion and more precisely his hidden lair, in which the costumes of the previous incarnations of Blue Beetle are located. One of the supercomputer’s screens lights up and, if the image is scrambled, a man’s voice rings out and asks anyone who can hear him to tell his daughter Jenny that her father is alive.

“Ted Kord is alive and well”we hear that a close-up on one of Blue Beetle’s outfits reminds us, if need be, of the identity of the one we are talking about and whose face we will not see.

THE FOLLOWING IN IDEAS?

In the interview he gave us, Angel Manuel Soto wants to be confident that this will not be the last time we see Jaime Reyes and his family on the big screen. And the post-credits scene goes in this direction, by opening the door to a sequel in which, one imagines, the hero and Jenny would go in search of Ted.

Who might not even be on Earth, since the Scarab that gives Jaime his powers is of extraterrestrial origin, in the comic books and the movie script that was inspired by it. But will the sequel see the light of day? Nothing is less sure.

Previous Blue Beetle costumes seen in the trailer

At this point, two questions remain. First of all, the box office, which often has the right of life or death over the future of a franchise. And the site of the future DC Universe that James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently building… and of which Blue Beetle could be a part. This is what Angel Manuel Soto said last June to Total Film.

While Batman and Superman will change faces, and the shared universe that we have known since Man of Steel will be partially or totally redone, the Blue Scarab would therefore be spared. And it’s all the more possible since the film, even if it mentions other superheroes, is self-sufficient and has no cameos.

WHO PLAYS TED KORD?

Today, even before the release of the first opus in the United States, its future remains unclear. Just as much as the identity of the interpreter of Ted Kord, which we do not see in the post-generic scene. A frequent technique in franchises, to leave the possibility of choosing an interpreter better known to the general public in the event of a sequel. Like Ant-Man 2 with Michelle Pfeiffer, absent from 1 while her character is present (and masked) in a flashback.

Some will however have noted, in the scene where Jenny evokes her parents, that the father looks like Jason Sudeikis on the painting which serves as a family photo. And that might not just be an impression, as the Ted Lasso actor has been linked to the role in May 2022. When a casting ad was looking for a stunt double for Ted Kord’s character and said they had to look as close to the attached photo as possible.

Jason Sudeikis, from Ted Lasso to Ted Kord? (unintentionally perfect pun)

The eyes were blurry, but hard not to recognize Jason Sudeikis. A few hours later, Entertainment Weekly debunked this rumour. But the question arises in front of the film, especially since the voice that we hear in the post-credits scene resembles his. Was it cut during editing, so as not to promise something that won’t happen if the sequel doesn’t see the light of day?

Or else it is the number 1 target of the production, who wants to enlist him in a second part and shows someone who looks like him for the moment (using a painting instead of a photo) before , maybe, have it in real life? This hallway noise around a lining questions but it will, in any case, have to wait. If only to find out if Blue Beetle has a sequel.

Note, however, that there would be a continuity that would only make French speakers laugh if Jason Sudeikis went from (Ted) Lasso to (Ted) Kord.

A SECOND POST-CREDITS SCENE?

Stay well until the very end of the credits for a second bonus. Less important and intriguing because it is a little gag: we are rebroadcast the little cartoon that Victoria Kord’s guards see on their screens when Rudy (George Lopez), Jaime’s uncle, scrambles their signal in order to let Jenny and her nephew retrieve an item they need.
