The new bosses of DC Studios, Peter Safran and James Gunn, have just revealed the films and series that will be released over the next 8 to 10 years in their new unified universe.
If all the projects of this first “chapter” baptized Gods and Monsters see the light of day, there will certainly be plenty to do at the cinema and on your couch.
A dozen projects already announced
As the DCU in its current form (or rather ITS forms, since films and series are not related) nears its end, the new co-presidents of DC Studios are finally ready to reveal some of their plans for the sequel. This time, the objective is to do like Marvel and to offer works connected to each other on different media: feature films, series, animation, video games. On Twitter, James Gunn even specified that if an actor or actress embodies a character on screen, he will also lend his voice to other media, and vice versa.
Some works will however remain disconnected from this new unified DC universe, such as the sequels to Joker and Batman by Matt Reeves. The second part of The Batman will also arrive in October 2025.
Despite multiple accusations against actor Ezra Miller, this is the movie The Flash, coming this summer, which will have the heavy task of launching this reboot of the DC universe. The consequences of Shazam! and Aquaman as well as Blue Beetle will still be released this year, as planned, in theaters.
Classics and surprises
Without further ado, here is the list of films and series announced, in the order of their citation by James Gunn. First, an animated series written by Gunn himself, Creature Commandos, is already in production. It will be a modernization of the original concept in which monsters team up to fight Nazis.
Comes next Wallera series derived from Peacemaker centered on the character still played by Viola Davis. The show is written by a promising team: Christal Henry (watch men) and Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol).
The first big piece will arrive in July 2025 with the film Superman: Legacy. Gunn is writing and potentially directing. No Henry Cavill or origin story here though. A long-awaited series Lanterns will see the light of day. This will focus on two Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Gunn compares the project to True Detectivewith a very Earth-centric plot essential to the DCU’s sequel.
Back to the cinema with The Authority, a project that is obviously very close to Gunn’s heart. There will be particular question of superheroes with… extreme methods. Direction HBO Max then, with the series Paradise Lost. A parallel with Game Of Thrones is made for this show taking place on the island of Themyscira, birthplace of Wonder Woman.
The DCU’s New Batman Will Be Introduced In The Brave and the Bold. He will be accompanied by his son Damian Wayne, aka Robin, for a father-son story that will launch the Bat Family. Also long overdue, an HBO Max series Gold Booster is still in the boxes. Gunn promises a mix of superheroes and impostor syndrome.
Perhaps to try to make people forget the violent cancellation of Batgirla movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was also announced. The work will be based on Tom King’s recent miniseries with a more badass character than usual. And finally, in the form of a horror film, Swamp Thing will again be in the spotlight, despite the failure of the last series concerning him.
