DDR5 RAM prices are at an all time low, now is the time to buy RAM

DDR5 memory prices have been steadily falling since the second half of 2022. According to several sources, this phenomenon should accelerate the adoption of the next generation of double-speed memory.

Higher transfer speeds, lower power consumption and increased density: these are the benefits of DDR5 RAM over its predecessor, DDR4. While the latter offers theoretical speeds of 25.6 GB/s, DDR5 is capable of communicating data at twice the speed, or 51.2 GB/s. It is not only faster, but also more efficient, with a slightly lower operating voltage (1.1 V versus 1.2 V).

According to some Taiwanese manufacturers, after the shortage of components in 2021, DDR5 prices are in freefall. A comparative table of the prices of various DDR5 modules in the spring of 2022 and to date confirms the rumor. A year ago, you had to pay $140 to get a 16 GB module of Corsair Vengeance RAM, the latter now only costs $63. A spectacular drop of 55% which represents a general trend, even if the other brands granted lower discounts than Corsair, with price reductions ranging from 40 to 45%.

The price of RAM is at its lowest: it’s good for the consumer, it’s less so for the manufacturers

DDR5 is, of course, the latest and greatest in RAM for desktops and laptops. But maybe you don’t have a compatible motherboard yet. Regardless, you can also take advantage of good prices on older memories, DDR3 and DDR4 modules. According to Digitimes, this drop in RAM prices indicates that component manufacturers are going through a rough patch: they have overproduced and are trying to sell off their stocks.

Despite this somewhat gloomy picture for the semiconductor sector, Digitimes believes that this price drop will contribute to accelerate consumer conversion to DDR5. If you were planning to equip yourself with RAM, now is probably the right time, because, just like last year, the market is not immune to big fluctuations in 2023.
