Of the RAM always faster for our PCs and our smartphones, but DDR6/LPDDR6 promise to go much further.
With each new generation of RAM, its small revolution and DDR6/LPDDR6 are obviously not going to deviate from the rule when they are released… which it is still a little early to know precisely.
However, the two technologies are much closer to us than you might believe, even though DDR5 has already been on the market for four years now.
A release closer than you might think
Through publications relayed by various colleagues, JEDEC clarified what we should expect on a strictly technical level with quite crazy performances… perhaps even more than expected.
First of all, and while we also talk a lot about GDDR6 at Clubic – in the field of graphics cards – we should not mix the two technologies, DDR6/LPDDR6 on one side and GDDR6 on the other. This second has already been available for a while while LPDDR6 should be available before the end of the year and DDR6 should follow in 2025.
If the documents are well linked to the specifications of JEDEC, an organization made up of all the biggest names in the world of semiconductors and which is responsible for harmonizing the positions of the industry giants to arrive at the final characteristics of RAM technologies.
10x the bandwidth of DDR4
In general and especially very schematically, we say that each new generation at least doubles the memory bandwidth of the previous one. In reality, DDR6/LPDDR6 should go well beyond that.
The documents thus presented notably report an increase by a factor of 10 in the bandwidth of DDR6 compared to the admittedly aging DDR4. We are also talking about a reference which starts with DDR6-8800 and up to DDR6-17600 for the simple first generation.
Subsequently, DDR6-21333 (or 21 Gbps) is expected and that is when we will talk about 10 times the bandwidth of DDR4-2133 which was launched with the Skylake generation (6th generation of Intel Core), almost ten years ago.
For its part, the LPDDR6 will not be left out with an introductory reference in LPDDR6-10667, but the LPDDR6-14400 is already mentioned, knowing that the LPDDR5-6400 is currently the maximum apart from the somewhat particular LPDDR5X and LPDDR5T.
There is no doubt that new information will gradually reach us, knowing that these new memory technologies will also adjust many other factors. For example, we are talking about better energy management, for greater efficiency.
