What started as a champagne bash ended with seven injured and one dead. The shock after the party evening in Weiden, Bavaria, is still deep, reports “Bild”.
Several people met on Saturday evening in the La Vita restaurant in Weiden to duly celebrate their colleague’s TV appearance – with plenty of sparkling wine.
Harald Z. dies that same night
But the evening ended in drama: the champagne was laced with a lethal dose of crystalline ecstasy, or MDMA for short. Eight guests were taken to the hospital, Harald Z.* († 52) did not survive the night. The other party guests are now out of danger.
The police have no doubt that the bottle was drugged. It is still unclear how the drugs got into the bottle. However, the suspicion of a drug smuggling breakdown is very close.
Is it a failed drug smuggling operation?
Since the people present opened the bottle themselves, it is unlikely that they put the drugs in the bottle. It should also be ruled out that the bottle had already been opened beforehand. When you open it, you notice if a bottle has already been open, as the “image” continues.
There are many indications that the champagne was manipulated by professionals. The most obvious is currently the following theory: Dealers had filled the drug into the bottle to filter it out at a later date. This process is comparable to extracting salt from the sea. The MDMA would be extracted from the corresponding liquid by heating the liquid, then purified and crystallized in a further step.
The magnum bottle is said to have been bought the day before the fatal stumbling. The police are currently investigating negligent homicide and are still looking for witnesses.
That’s how “creative” drug smugglers are
A look into the past shows: dealers come up with some great ideas to smuggle their drugs across national borders. The strategy of smuggling drugs between fruits or vegetables from one country to another is particularly popular.
For example, there were drug raids in several Coop branches in the summer of 2020. The reason: Cocaine had been seized in countless banana boxes. A total of 140 kilograms worth several million francs.
What is Crystal Ecstasy?
Crystalline ecstasy, also known as MDMA crystals, is a special form of the party drug that is otherwise often taken as pills. The pills are often dissolved in alcoholic beverages without the drug being tasted. MDMA is not to be confused with crystal meth, which is also sold as crystals. By taking ecstasy, users are put into a euphoric state and their sensory perceptions are heightened.

Drugs delivered directly from the Büsi
Others get even more creative. For example, a criminal Nigerian organization hid cocaine in the bodies of couriers on a large scale for several years and thus transported it to Switzerland.
Some dealers also make innocent companions at the mercy of their criminal activities. In spring 2021, for example, a dealer tried to smuggle drugs into a prison in Panama with the help of a cat. He had hung the contraband in a pouch around the cat’s neck. (dzc)
