Dead Island 2: The map will be divided into districts, without being a real open world


Dead Island 2 showed up again at gamescom and seems, this time, on the right track, since we had the right to a release date. In the wake of this event that everyone has been waiting for for years, the developers, Dambuster Studios, have delivered some details through interviews, in particular to Eurogamer, allowing us to learn more about the world in which we will have to survive.

The story here takes place in Los Angeles, but we won’t be able to venture anywhere. As David Stenton and James Worral explain, Los Angeles will consist of several districts, which players will be able to unlock by advancing in the story, in a linear fashion. Some districts will be larger than others, and they will all have side quests and different activities for players to choose from should they wish to linger in those areas. Dead Island 2 will therefore not be an open worldstrictly speaking.

Furthermore, each of these districts will offer different zombies, linked to the atmosphere or the initial population of the district. James Worral takes the example of a place called Muscle Beach, where the people present are mostly quite muscular, which will offer us larger zombies than in other places. The objective is not to put undead hordes a la World War Z but rather to give the impression that they have all been alive before.
