Russian general was probably army chief at time of death

The chief of staff of the 35th army of the Russian armed forces is killed in a rocket attack in southern Ukraine. According to British information, the major-general was apparently in command of the major formation at the time of his death.

The senior Russian general, who was killed in a Ukrainian missile strike in the Zaporizhia region, was believed to be acting commander of the 35th Army at the time of his death, according to the UK Ministry of Defense. The ministry said in its latest intelligence report that Major General Sergei Goryachev was “almost certainly” killed in an attack on a command post in southern Ukraine.

Goryachev was the chief of staff of the 35th Army of the Russian Federation, but the actual commander, Lieutenant General Alexandr Sanchik, had previously been appointed to a higher position, according to the report. An official deployed by Russia in Ukraine, Vladimir Rogov, confirmed the death on Tuesday.

Goryachev is the first Russian general to be killed in Ukraine this year. Elements of the 35th Army were present in the city during the Bucha massacre in March 2022. The large association is said to have been largely destroyed near Isjum in the summer of last year.

According to media reports, Goryachev fought in the Second Chechen War (1999-2009) and commanded Russian troops in Moldova’s breakaway Transnistria region. He later managed a Russian military base in Tajikistan. At the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Goryachev was in command of the 5th Separate Armored Brigade. He was 52 years old.

According to pro-Russian war blogger Anatoly Shariy, at least eight other officers were killed in the attack along with Goryachev. According to him, the attack was carried out with a long-range Storm Shadow missile of British and French development. The information cannot be verified.
