Deadly danger – that’s how distracted people are in traffic

Road users actually know …
In theory, drivers are usually aware of the distractions that can lead to dangerous driving errors. A representative online survey by the ÖAMTC showed that talking to passengers, using devices and making phone calls while driving or listening to music are sometimes considered to be the most distracting activities. “The results from our real driving study from 2020 also show that dangers from distraction at the wheel are underestimated and the necessary safety reactions are not used correctly. The risks and possible consequences should therefore be brought more into the focus of the attention of all road users, for example in the context of driver training, ”says the traffic psychologist. “With young cyclists, the training for voluntary bicycle exams could already begin. Rental vehicle providers should also urge their users to avoid distractions while driving. In the case of car drivers, the topic of carelessness in training and further education could be addressed even more intensely, for example with the help of descriptive exercises or demonstrations, as is done in the multi-phase training courses. “
