Passionate about mountaineering and experienced walker, actor Julian Sands has not given a signed life since January 13. Five months after his disappearance, human remains have been discovered, and have just been authenticated as being those of the actor.
In early January 2023, actor Julian Sands, a mountaineering enthusiast and experienced walker, embarked on an expedition near Mount San Antonio, California, which peaks at 3068m. Since January 13, he had not given any sign of life. Searches by the San Bernardino County Police, using a helicopter and even drones, turned up nothing.
This Saturday, June 24, five months after his disappearance, human remains were discovered by hikers, near the geographical area where the actor was declared missing. Entrusted to a medical examiner, he confirmed that it was indeed those of the actor, officially declared dead by the authorities. The exact causes and circumstances of his death have yet to be determined.
A tragic outcome for this great actor, 65 years old, who had been revealed in The Tear, Roland Joffé’s masterpiece. And especially in Room with a view by James Ivory, in 1986.
Noteworthy beginnings
Julian Sands grew up in a large family of five children, who were raised by their single mother after her divorce. Very young, he showed a pronounced taste and talent for comedy.
After studying drama at the Central School of Speech and Dramait thus joins the Forum Theater Company, which allows him to play in many plays. At the same time, he passes castings for the small as well as for the big screen.

Julian finds his first significant role in the war film The Tear (1985), about the Khmer Rouge dictatorship. We then see him in The Doctor and the Assassins, Gothic and especially Room with a view, a romantic drama where he falls under the spell of Helena Bonham Carter. Playing in international films, he played a wizard in the horrific Warlock (1989) and a lawyer accused of murder in the thriller Tennessee Nights (id.).
Active, Julian Sands specializes in horror. His performances in Arachnophobia, Le Festin nu, Warlock 2, Le Tour d’énus and Le Fantôme de l’Opéra bear witness to this. Proof of his ability to worry, he plays a terrifying mafia in the moving Leaving Las Vegas (he becomes the favorite actor of Mike Figgis who then hires him for For a night, The End of Sexual Innocence, Time Code, Hotel and La Maison crooked after Agatha Christie).
A very present actor in the series
From the 2000s, the native of Otley multiplied the roles in various films (few comedies however) and often unknown to the general public. Among them we can cite The Million Dollar Hotel, Love Me, Le Médaillon, La Piste, L’Enfer des loups, Blood and Bone, Suspension of Disbelief and The Painted Bird. He also tours from time to time under the leadership of great filmmakers like Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 13) and David Fincher (Millennium).
Always since the 2000s, Julian Sands is more present on the side of television series. He thus finds more or less significant characters in Jackie Chan (where he officiates as a voice actor), Smallville (in the skin of young Jor-El), Stargate SG-1, New York Special Unit, 24 hours chrono (where he plays a Russian businessman alongside Kiefer Sutherland), Blood Ties, Ghost Whisperer, Dexter, Crossbones, Will and What/If.
