Death of a Dutch soldier after a shooting in the United States

A Dutch special forces soldier injured along with two of his colleagues in a shootout outside their hotel in the US city of Indianapolis has died, the Dutch Ministry of Defense announced on Monday (29 August).

The three men, who were in the United States for training, were off duty when the incident occurred early Saturday, the ministry said.

Local US media said the shooting may have followed an earlier altercation and was not random. “The Dutch commando who was in critical condition in a hospital in the US city of Indianapolis died from his injuries last night“, said the Ministry of Defense in a press release. “His family and colleagues were by his side“, he added. The other two soldiers are conscious and able to speak, he added.

The three soldiers belong to the Dutch Commando Corps, the special forces unit of the Dutch Armed Forces. Dutch military police said they had sent three detectives to the United States to gather information but would not open their own investigation because they had “nono skill“.
