Death of actor Paul Geoffrey, the Percival of Excalibur


Paul Geoffrey, known for his roles in the films “Excalibur” and “Greystoke, the legend of Tarzan”, died on June 3.

As Variety reports, English actor Paul Geoffrey died on June 3 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from cancer. He was 68 years old.

A comedian at heart, Paul continued acting for the rest of his life. He loved French wine and food, had an amazing understanding of history, was a lifelong Arsenal fan and excelled at being the nicest guy in the world.,” the Santa Fe New Mexican said of the actor.

Born February 12, 1955 in Surrey, Paul Geoffrey grew up and educated in England. He began his screen career in 1977 and first appeared on the professional stage the following year at London’s Haymarket Theater Royal, playing John Daly in a revival of NC Hunter’s play, Waters of the Moon.

A SPECIALIZED CAREER

Paul Geoffrey specialized early on in classical roles and became known for his many performances in literary adaptations and period dramas. Thus, he is known for his role as Perceval in Excalibur, the 1981 fantasy film written and directed by John Boorman starring Nigel Terry, Helen Mirren and Liam Neeson, which told the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. The feature film won Best Artistic Contribution at Cannes that year and was nominated for the Oscar for Best Cinematography.

Still on the cinema side, we could also see him in the role of Tarzan’s biological father, Lord John ‘Jack’ Clayton in Greystoke, the legend of Tarzan by Ralph Richardson in 1984, alongside Christopher Lambert and Andie MacDowell. He also played Mr Lockwood in Peter Kosminsky’s 1992 adaptation of Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, starring Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes. At the same time, he played in Anna Karenine (1985) with Jacqueline Bisset and Christopher Reeve, or in Thomas Crown (1999) with Pierce Brosnan.

On the small screen, Paul Geoffrey appeared, among others, in series such as Inspector Morse, Hercule Poirot, Miss Manager and his Footballers and more recently Better Call Saul in 2015. He made his last screen appearance in 2019 in the series Perpetual Grace, LTD alongside Ben Kingsley, Jimmi Simpson and Luis Guzmán.

Paul Geoffrey moved to Santa Fe in the early 1990s where he became a real estate agent, although he continued to act on the side. He is survived by his wife, Sue Taylor, and his three children, Alex, Oliver and Daisy.
