Born in the United States, Dennis Berry had lived in Paris since the 1970s. The couple was already separated when the actress died in Paris, in 1979.

In 1982, he married another icon of the New Wave, the Danish Anna Karina, who appeared in several films by Jean-Luc Godard, including Pierrot le fou. This is a fourth marriage for Anna Karina, and it will be the last.
