Undoubtedly more than any other contemporary sovereign, Elizabeth II embodied the soul of the British nation, during a reign of exceptional longevity. The one who celebrated her platinum jubilee last June for her 70 years of reign has just died at the venerable age of 96.
Ascended to the throne on February 6, 1952, she saw no less than 15 Prime Ministers, from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss, whom she met on September 6, 2022. A reign marked by the great upheavals in the history of a sometimes tragic countries throughout the 20th century. Although she has sometimes had to face virulent criticism from the press against the royal family, support for the monarchy and her personal popularity remain high among the British population.
Having long become a symbol, the sovereign has logically been immortalized in many films and TV series, including in cartoons, such as The Simpsons. The sign also that it no longer belonged, for a long time, only to British heritage, but universal. A historical page is turned.
