PARIS (Reuters) – The former mayor of Marseille, Jean-Claude Gaudin, died at the age of 84, Emmanuel Macron said on Monday, saluting a “child of Mazargues (who) had risen to the highest positions of the Republic”.
“Jean-Claude Gaudin is no more. He was Marseille made man. From his city, his passion, he had the accent, the fever, the fraternity,” declared the President of the Republic on X.
“I think of his loved ones and the people of Marseille,” he added.
In addition to his position as mayor of Marseille from 1995 to 2020, Jean-Claude Gaudin held several mandates as municipal councilor, deputy, president of the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis and even senator.
The president of the Republicans, Eric Ciotti, also paid tribute to the former councilor on listened to his advice. I am proud to have worked alongside him. My pain is immense, I am losing a friend.
He was sentenced in 2022 to six months in prison in a case of fictitious overtime for civil servants in several municipal services.
