Martin Scorsese, who had directed Gaspard Ulliel in an advertising spot for the Chanel brand, paid a moving tribute to the actor, who died on Wednesday at the age of 37.

He had directed it in 2010 in a commercial for Chanel which had gone around the world. Martin Scorsese paid a moving tribute to actor Gaspard Ulliel, who tragically passed away on Wednesday at the age of 37.

“I had been so impressed by his dedication and his intelligence”, says the American filmmaker in a press release forwarded to the Indiewire site. “He loved movies, and I’m sure he would have become an interesting director if he had lived to fulfill his dream.”

Below, behind the scenes of the Scorsese/Ulliel collaboration:

Filmed in New York, the spot for Bleu de Chanel perfume, a real short film, sees Gaspard Ulliel play a star interviewed by a pack of journalists, including a former girlfriend. Visibly disconcerted, he declares “I will no longer be who they expect me to be” then leaves a press conference room whose walls are collapsing under the notes of the tube She Said Yeah of the Rolling Stones.

The spot directed by Scorsese can be found below. Note that Gaspard Ulliel will shoot two more for Chanel, this time in front of the cameras of James Gray and Steve McQueen.

Gaspard Ulliel died on Wednesday at the age of 37 following a skiing accident. His disappearance sparked strong reactions in the world of the seventh art.
