By wanting to condemn this drone strike in Lebanon which led to the death of Hamas number two, rebellious France has once again sparked controversy. MP Ersillia Soudais notably accuses Israel of “ethnic cleansing”. For the moment, the Jewish state has not claimed responsibility for this attack.

She denounced “the war criminal Netanyahu who poses the risk of a regionalized war.” With these words, Mathilde Panot, leader of the rebellious deputies, sparked a certain controversy, fueled by the remarks made by the deputy Ersillia Soudais who accuses the Hebrew state of “ethnic cleansing” in the region.

Statements which come the day after a drone strike in Lebanon which caused the death of Saleh al-Arouri, the number two of the Hamas terrorist movement. Widely singled out, Israel has not yet claimed responsibility for this attack. Tuesday evening, however, President Emmanuel Macron called on the Jewish state to “avoid any escalatory attitude, particularly in Lebanon”.

Licra asks Yaël Braun-Pivet to sanction Mathilde Panot

In France, the tone has also gone up a notch since Jean-Luc Mélenchon asked the Head of State to urgently convene the UN Security Council and take firm sanctions against Israel. In response, Licra accused rebellious France of supporting Hamas terrorists and asked Yaël Braun-Pivet, the president of the National Assembly, to sanction Mathilde Panot.

Since the start of the conflict, rebellious France has remained very ambiguous towards Hamas. Last November, MP Danièle Obono described the members of the terrorist organization as “resistance fighters”. A political strategy which aims to strengthen the support of the electorate from an immigrant background in the run-up to the European elections.
