This is news that saddens the people of Marseille. Emmanuel Macron spoke this Monday, May 20 to announce the death of the former mayor of Marseille. “Jean-Claude Gaudin is no longer,” he noted on X (formerly Twitter). And added: “He was Marseille made man. From his city, his passion, he had the accent, the fever, the fraternity. For her, this child from Mazargues had risen to the highest positions in the Republic which he served. I think of his loved ones and the people of Marseille.”
As a native of the country, Jean-Pierre Foucault quickly spoke up. “I am all the more moved since I had dinner with him the day before yesterday. And I told my wife when we left dinner that I had the impression that this was the last time we would see him.“, he told Pascal Praud on Europe 1. And continued: “He was passionate, wise and he was still very much listened to by our current leaders.“.

When he confided with emotion about his celibacy
Jean-Claude Gaudin had a busy life and was even featured in a documentary in 2020, on the Public Sénate channel. The one we nicknamed “great Baron” had mentioned Marseille, his love of politics but also his bitter observation regarding his celibacy.
What worried him the most? Loneliness and the impossibility of sharing your distress with someone. “I’m going to be 80 soon. I’m a little worried about the future for me, that’s it. Because I don’t have a family, you know…”. Indeed, Jean-Claude Gaudin has never been married and has no children. Basically, his only real love story was politics and in particular his link with Marseille, a city ruled between 1995 and 2020.
