Sylvain Augier died on March 16, following an illness that occurred at his home in Lecques (Gard), reported Midi-Free. He was 68 years old. It is in this town that he resided with his wife Carol, his lifelong support, as he had affirmed in the past. The host had suffered from depression for a long time. He told his story in his book I am coming back from far (Ed. Telemaque), published in bookstores on October 12. In this work, Sylvain Augier also spoke about his bipolarity, which was at the origin of his depressive disorders. In parallel with the illness, the former host of The treasure map had experienced other trials During his life. At the end of the 1980s, for example, he was victim of a paragliding accident“which had almost cost him his life, and following which he had spent six months in hospital“, recalled Le Figaro in its edition of October 25, 2023. At the age of 55, he had tried to end his lifewhile lying down “on the TGV rails, not far from his home, in Gard.” If the television man had not taken action, it was becausehe finally had a flash of lucidity and love for those close to him, a few seconds before the tragedy. “Suicide is the end of my suffering, but the beginning of that of others, of my wife, my children, my friends.“, he observed to our colleagues.
Sylvain Augier then had paid a touching tribute to his wife Carol, who had always been there in difficult times, as he recalled. “My wife to whom I have been married for thirty-three years is an extraordinary support. She never let go of me but she sometimes shook me, yelled at me“, said the man who kept his bipolarity to himself for a long time. Before specifying: “When I was addicted to morphine, after my paragliding accident, she said to me: ‘If you don’t stop, I’ll leave you’ and I stopped that within a minute.”

His theory about his ouster from The treasure map
On television, we don’t always stop presenting a show by choice. So, in 2005, television host Sylvain Augier was fired by France 3. He presented the adventure game The treasure map since 1996. 18 years later, he returned to this eviction, which had affected him, in the show At Jordan’s. He then confided on the set that the announcement had been made to him “by the program management of France Télévision on the pretext that I had had a motorcycle accident in Corsica.” And the person concerned continued: “It’s true but there was no reason other than to make me change… I think bipolarity had something to do with it“he confided.
According to him, people from his team had reported the first signs of his illness to management. “It started to show. I had low morale which was not good for running the show… I worried unnecessarily, I lost my dynamism“, he also said. And to note: “The audiovisual industry is ruthless.”
