Deauville 2023: Emilia Clarke rewarded, Guillaume Canet president… All about the 49th American Film Festival

Kick off for the 49th edition of the Deauville American Film Festival, which will take place from September 1 to 10. The films, the jurors, the stars expected (or absent)… Follow the guide!

The fall is fast approaching. The festivals that accompany it too: Venice is launched, Toronto is getting ready and it’s Deauville’s turn to begin its 49th edition. Marked, as everywhere else, by the writers’ and actors’ strike which has paralyzed Hollywood for several weeks and somewhat upset the line-up of the event.

While they were to receive a tribute (also called Deauville Talent Award), Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Peter Dinklage and Joseph Gordon-Levitt all canceled their visit, in solidarity with the movement across the Atlantic. Not the British Emilia Clarke, who will be awarded the New Hollywood Prize, on the sidelines of the presentation of The Pod Generation.

Seen recently in the series Marvel Secret Invasion, the actress succeeds Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Jessica Chastain, Daniel Radcliffe or her Game of Thrones partner Sophie Turner, on the list of winners of this trophy given to a rising star.

Emilia Clarke will be one of the few stars present on the boards, between September 1 and 10. But festival-goers will be able to attend meetings with the directors, masterclasses or see the juries led by Guillaume Canet and Mélanie Thierry. In addition to composing their schedule among the eighty films spread over eight categories. Follow the leader !

REVELATION JURY

FIRST

Because competition and prizes are not the only things in the life of the Deauville American Film Festival. As every year, the films will be previewed. At the opening and closing, but also throughout the event. The opportunity to discover the last Cannes Grand Prix, La Zone d’Intérêt.

THE UNCLE SAM DOCUMENTS

The American Film Festival also gives pride of place to documentaries, which this year will be six in number. Including one directed by Oliver Stone, already present in this section two years ago.

WINDOW ON FRENCH CINEMA

For the third year, the Deauville Festival will host a selection of French films and, this year, a series.

CROISETTE TIME

For the fourth consecutive year, the Deauville Festival opens its doors to that of Cannes. And screens three of the films of its selection (two from the Competition, one from the Un Certain Regard category).

ORNANO-VALENTI PRIZE

Created in 1991 by member companies of the Motion Picture Association (MPA), which brings together six American film production and distribution studios, the Ornano-Valenti Prize, awarded by a jury of Anglo-Saxon journalists, rewards a first French film, with the aim of helping its recognition, promotion and export.

This year it will be awarded, during the closing ceremony, to Nothing to Lose by Delphine Deloget with Virginie Efira, which successfully passed the last Cannes Film Festival, in the Un Certain Regard category.

MET

Three masterclasses, or “conversations”, are planned this year at the Deauville American Film Festival.

Conversation with Luc Besson, on the occasion of the presentation of his new film, Dogman – Sunday, September 3 at 4:30 p.m.

Conversation with Kyle Eastwood, on the occasion of the release of his new album and the screening of the documentary Eastwood Symphonic: a family affair – Tuesday, September 5 at 4 p.m.

Conversation with Carole Bouquet – Saturday September 9 at 11 a.m.
