Decision in July – the spa town of Baden is on the way to becoming a World Heritage Site

As part of the “Great Spas of Europe”, Baden could soon do the same as the Wachau or Hallstatt: The ICOMOS advisory committee recommends that the association of eleven European spa towns be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The responsible committee in China will decide on this at the end of July.

The chances of this are good, the ICOMOS recommendation is an important basis for the committee’s decision. Above all, she emphasizes the outstanding values of bathing culture as a European phenomenon. As the largest Austrian spa in the 19th century, Baden belongs to the “Great Spas of Europe” due to the historical-therapeutic spa landscape and the history of the spa with medicinal water.

Experts from eleven cities in seven countries have been working on the nomination since 2012. “We are therefore very pleased about this positive recommendation, which makes the potential as a world heritage clear,” said Mayor Stefan Szirucsek. The decision will be made in China in the second half of July.
