Decoration rules: 8 tips for a cozy home

New apartment or do you want to spruce up your old one? We'll tell you which rules you should absolutely observe.

Furnishing a house or apartment is something very personal. Therefore there are basically no mistakes – no right or wrong. However, there are a few tips that you should keep in mind if you want to protect yourself from nasty surprises. Experts always adhere to these rules:

1. Always order samples!

Whether the couch, chairs or the floor covering. Always get samples of fabrics or materials. Because they often look very different from the catalog or don't feel like you would expect. This is the only way to prevent a major bad buy.

2. Big spaces, big patterns

Even if they look so beautiful on the roll: Wallpapers with filigree patterns often get lost in large rooms. You should be aware of this rule before you start wallpapering. Perhaps a larger pattern could be considered as an alternative.

3. Test the color in different light

Have you ever painted in the dark and the morning after that came the rude awakening? The color suddenly looked totally different? Lay on the light! So: Better to test the color in different lighting conditions. This way you can be sure that you choose the right shade.

4. Always measure the chair legs

The chairs looked great – zack, bought 4. Unfortunately, the height does not now fit under the dining table. Classic furnishing mistake! Not every chair goes well with every table. So: always measure! Speaking of measuring: Always check the dimensions of the elevator and the doors before you order large pieces of furniture – otherwise you won't know how to get them into the apartment afterwards.

5. Don't overload the room

Sure, tastes are different and some people love to have all sorts of clutter at home. But one thing is clear: decoration only attracts attention when there is space. Means: Better to buy a stylish large vase than place 5 small ones next to each other. Fall in love with unique pieces and then skilfully stage them!

6. Set color focus

Do you want to live in a Villekulla villa? Great, then buy everything wild and colorful together. Can also be a concept. If you want to bring more calm to your interior, you can set color focal points and orient yourself, for example, on a main and one or two secondary colors. It starts with the color of the wall and extends to the pillows or vases.

7. Choose different textures

The same rule applies here as in fashion: different textures and fabrics offer variety. Anyone who has already covered the sofa in velvet shouldn't choose curtains, chairs and carpets from the same texture. Just seems too monotonous!

8. Speaking of carpets: Don't buy too small!

Nothing is more annoying than buying a rug that ends up being too small. Measure generously beforehand. Do the sofa legs also fit on the carpet? Is it wide enough too? This will save you a lot of grief!
