Decoration trend: Guido Maria Kretschmer reveals his golden instructions

To imitate
Design your own plates

© Sabine Büttner

Instead of buying boring decorative plates, we can simply design them ourselves and let our imagination run wild. Guido shows you how it works.

You need:

  • Depending on the size of the plate, approx. 2 rolls of white toilet paper
  • Wallpaper paste
  • Wood glue
  • Chalk powder
  • key
  • Hand blender or stand mixer
  • Breakthrough
  • old tea towel
  • 1 large plate (e.g. pasta plate Ø 28 cm)
  • Cling film
  • Masking tape
  • vaseline
  • Plasterer iron
  • spoon
  • Deco metal in gold and application milk (e.g. from Rayher)
  • 2 round brushes (size 4)

That’s how it’s done

  1. Place toilet paper rolls vertically in a bowl, cover with water. After a short time loosen and remove the inner cardboard tubes. Let toilet paper soak for at least 1 hour. Then pluck into small pieces in the water and grind with a hand blender or in small portions in a blender. Proceed as described on page 45 from no. 3 / photo C (but only with 2 tbsp paste and 0.5 tbsp each of chalk and wood glue).
  2. Grease the inside of the pasta plate with a little petroleum jelly (this is how the film holds better) and line it smoothly with cling film (for very large plates, connect the cling film pieces with crepe tape), fix the film on the back with crepe tape.
  3. Apply the pulp mass in portions to the plate, press firmly and smooth the surface evenly with the plasterer’s iron. The best way to do this on the curves is with a spoon.
  4. Make the edge a little irregular or frayed. The underside of the plate is not quite even because the cling film is pressed into the shape there.
  5. When the plate is completely dry, remove it from the form / foil. With a brush on the edge and in the recess, egg-shaped, but not in the middle, apply application milk, allow to dry a little, apply gold metal in small pieces and dab on with the second brush. Let dry.
