Fischtown ends Reimer’s great career

DEL record scorer Patrick Reimer involuntarily resigns from the DEL stage prematurely. The 40-year-old is eliminated from the pre-playoffs of the German Ice Hockey League with the Nuremberg Ice Tigers. Meanwhile, his ex-club Düsseldorf is still fighting for the championship after an impressive victory.

The nearly 20-year DEL career of former national ice hockey player Patrick Reimer ended with the playoff of his Nuremberg Ice Tigers. Nürnberg also lost the second game of the best-of-three series against the Fischtown Pinguins from Bremerhaven with 2:4 (0:2, 2:0, 0:2). This concludes the pre-playoffs for the Ice Tigers and Reimer’s career. Bremerhaven, on the other hand, is just like Düsseldorfer EG early in the playoff quarterfinals, which begins for both teams next Wednesday.

“So far there has only been ice hockey in my life. Now I’m happy that it’s changing a bit,” said Reimer at MagentaSport, but he will certainly miss the sport soon. “It’s amazing,” said Reimer to the chants of the audience, “a nice award. I’m just grateful.”

Bremerhaven will now play a maximum of seven games first with the main round winner EHC Red Bull Munich and DEG with the main round runners-up ERC Ingolstadt. In the evening, Düsseldorf outclassed newly promoted Löwen Frankfurt 5: 1 (2: 0, 1: 1, 2: 0). They had already won 5-0 on Tuesday. “That gives you self-confidence,” said captain Alex Barta at MagentaSport on the sovereign quarter-finals entry.

The playoff quarter-finals of the German Ice Hockey League start on Tuesday with the series Straubing against Wolfsburg and Mannheim against Cologne. Reimer, who is leaving without a championship title, can then only watch. The 40-year-old Olympic silver medalist from 2018 was less happy with his team in his 1069th DEL game on Friday. In the middle section, the Franconians fought their way back against the no-frills North Germans. But in the final third, Bremerhaven picked up again and made it through to the quarter-finals with Alexander Friesen (50th minute). Jan Urbas (59th) scored in the empty Nuremberg goal.

Reimer’s ex-club Düsseldorf was far too strong for his opponent Frankfurt. Even the comeback of Frankfurt’s top scorer Dominik Bokk after recovering from injury did not change that. “We have to compliment Düsseldorf. It’s a really good ice hockey team,” said defender Reid McNeill. Reimer, who has been voted the best DEL player three times and is the DEL record scorer, started his career at DEG in the 2003/2004 season. In almost 20 years he was only active for Düsseldorf and Nuremberg.
