Bad PR move for Deliveroo. On this Sunday, May 26, Mother’s Day, the meal delivery application decided that it would be wise to send a notification simulating “ a missed call from mom » to its users.

False alarm, this is an exercise! Take advantage of this simulation to wish your mother a birthday ”, indicated the rest of the message. Very quickly, messages deploring an obvious lack of tact flooded X.com, formerly Twitter. “ Big thought to all those who, like me, had their hearts sink when seeing this notification because they no longer have the chance to receive missed calls from their mother », We could read in one of them.

Deliveroo apologizes

Contacted by Tech&Co, Deliveroo wanted to apologize to users and recognizes a clear error on its part. “ We regret sending this notification, it was a mistake on our part and we apologize to anyone who may have been hurt by this message. », Commented one of its spokespersons.

As the media points out, this is not the first time that the company has made a communication error. In 2021, she sent a message to users as an April Fool’s joke, telling them that an order for 38 pizzas, or 450 euros, had been recorded. A joke which worried many customers, since some of them canceled their bank card.

Not a first

Deliveroo is not the only company to have shown clumsiness in its communication, and Internet users were keen to point this out. “ You’re stupid, you’re ugly »… In 2022, Burger King, famous for its scathing publicity stunts, sent five unfriendly notifications to its users. A few minutes later, a final notification justified these messages as anti-harassment day. “ Tomorrow we will donate all profits from the King Jr menus to the Les Papillons association. », he indicated, before launching a call for donations for the association.

While some welcomed a genius communication move, others criticized the brand’s method, deemed inappropriate for people who have actually been victims of harassment.

Even so, Deliveroo’s Mother’s Day notification caused a much bigger outcry. “ I’d like to explain to Deliveroo how distressing and horrible this can be, but I’d rather uninstall their service », protested an X.com user.
