DeLorean presents two eccentric concepts that confuse its ambitions

DeLorean took advantage of its presence at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to present two very different concepts. The only problem is that with these two projects, it’s hard to understand how the brand really wants to fit in with time.

Each year, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in the United States is an opportunity for various manufacturers to present concepts or new products to the public, or at more private events. DeLorean took advantage of the event taking place from August 18 to 21, to present its future Alpha5 to the public, but also two more concepts at a private party.

These are two very different visions of the future of the brand in the short and longer term. The first is directly derived from the Delorean Alpha5, presented in May 2022, and could materialize quite easily. The second model is much more extreme, since it is inspired by off-road racing and sports a very futuristic look.

A DeLorean Alpha5 Plasmatail for 204?

The DeLorean Alpha5 Plasmatail Concept is a boxed version of the Alpha5 Coupe. A body that could be classified in the category of shooting wagons, a bit like the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. DeLorean presents the project as follows: The 2024 Alpha5 Plasmatail is an extension of the original coupe with the same passenger seating capacity, but with additional storage space. »

We would then find on this concept the same technical basis as the Alpha5. A car just under 5 meters long, to carry 4 people on board. It would be equipped with a 100 kWh battery which would allow it to cover more than 480 km. It could also certainly shoot down the 0 to 100 km/h in about 3 seconds like the coupe. We imagined that the brand would take advantage of the presentation of the Alpha5 during the event to say more about its specificities and its price, but it will apparently have to wait a while longer.

The Alpha5 model is only planned to be produced in 88 copies for its launch. We can imagine that this Plasmatail version could very well be a limited edition to complete this first production.

DeLorean Omega: an all-terrain concept for 2040

If starting a range of a new brand with a model called Alpha seems coherent, even if not very original, already predicting the Omega, that is to say the end, in 2040, seems more paradoxical.

DeLorean introduces this concept with these words: “The Omega 2040 represents the next generation of our design philosophy, which has its roots in Bajas-themed off-road racing. [du nom de la coupe du monde de véhicules tout terrain].”

This futuristic all-terrain vehicle could make sense in a world that has become desert due to climate change. When discovering this concept, it is above all an impression of deja vu that comes to us: that of the Audi concept presented in 2019 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Where is DMC/DeLorean coming from, with these two concepts presented simultaneously? Does the brand want to be part of a very high-end positioning with an eccentric tendency? It is difficult to know, through the various concepts launched over the years, where the brand wants to go. What is his philosophy? How do we recognize it? If Alpha5 seems like a realistic project, the Omega concept completely confuses us.
