Hundreds of people protest against police violence

The death of a person during a police check in Mannheim flares up the debate about police violence. Hundreds of people took to the streets in the city itself. The demo was not entirely peaceful.
Around 900 people demonstrated against police violence in downtown Mannheim. They were walking through the city because of a death following a police stop earlier this week. Posters or banners read something like “No Justice No Peace” or “Mourning Anger Resistance. Who protects us from the police?”
In the course of the march, Bengali torches and smoke flares were burned and firecrackers were ignited, the police said. The town hall, the district court, the police station in the city center and other buildings were damaged by paint bags and bottles thrown and spray paint. There were no attacks on police officers, and no injuries, as a spokesman said.
During a police check in downtown Mannheim on Monday, a 47-year-old patient from the Central Institute for Mental Health collapsed and was initially revived. He later died in hospital. According to the authorities, the investigation will take a few more weeks.
