Denmark will impose an ecotax on plane tickets

Denmark will introduce an ecotax on plane tickets of 13.50 euros on average by 2030, the government announced Friday, December 15, calling for the adoption of a European tax on the subject.

“The transport sector is currently undergoing a rapid green transition, and with this agreement, this also concerns aviation. It will always be possible to fly, but it must be possible to do so in an ecological way”declared the Danish Minister of Transport, Thomas Danielsen, quoted in a press release.

This tax, which will apply to flights departing from Denmark but not connecting passengers, will be 30 crowns (4 euros) for short-haul flights when it is introduced in 2025 and will gradually increase to 50 crowns (6, 70 euros) in 2030. It will be higher for medium and long-haul, reaching 410 crowns (55 euros) for the latter in 2030.

“I imagine that over the years we will have common European regulations in this area. That would be the right way to go.”declared the Minister of Climate and Energy, Lars Aagaard.

The measure should make it possible to finance investments in favor of the ecological transition of domestic air transport and an increase in the old-age check, aid received by people receiving the lowest pensions, of almost 2 billion euros per year.
