Denmark’s comeback firmly in view: Eriksen’s football fairy tale is faltering because of Corona

Denmark comeback firmly in view
Eriksen’s football fairy tale is stalling because of Corona

Eight months ago, Christian Eriksen almost died on the pitch, now he is said to be involved with the Danish national team again. The football miracle will have to wait a bit, however, because he has now tested positive for Corona. But the infection will probably not stop him.

The return of professional soccer player Christian Eriksen to the Danish national team has been delayed by a few days due to a corona infection. Although the 30-year-old will not travel to the team on Monday as planned, the 30-year-old should still make his international comeback as planned next Saturday.

“We expect to see Christian as soon as possible during the week,” Denmark national coach Kasper Hjulmand was quoted as saying on the Twitter channel of the Danish Football Association DBU. “We’re looking forward to having him in the team and we’re counting on him in the exciting friendlies against the Netherlands and Serbia.” These will take place on March 26th and 29th.

The goal is the World Cup at the end of the year

Eriksen’s club FC Brentford had announced before the Premier League game at Leicester City on Sunday that the midfielder was not available due to corona. The Dane only made his comeback on the lawn on February 26 after a nine-month break. So far he has been used in three league games for the promoted team, twice of which lasted 90 minutes. Last weekend he provided the assist for the opening goal in the 2-0 win against Burnley FC. “He was the best player on the pitch,” Hjulmand praised the 30-year-old afterwards.

Now the next eagerly awaited comeback is faltering. “He’s back,” the newspaper “Ekstra Bladet” headlined euphorically. “I want to play again. My goal is to take part in the World Cup,” said Eriksen himself. Despite the interruption, the dream now seems within reach, the tournament in Qatar is in December – there is still enough time.

On June 12, in Denmark’s first group game of the European Championship against Finland, Eriksen’s life hung by a thread after his collapse. The Inter Milan star collapsed on the lawn of Copenhagen’s Parken as if struck by lightning, he was resuscitated in time and called his shocked teammates from his bedside via video call. Eriksen’s fate and recovery shaped the tournament. A defibrillator was used for the 109-time national player, so he was no longer allowed to play in Italy. Eriksen accepted the fight for his dream – against all odds.
