Belinda Bencic gave Iga Swiatek a tough fight at Wimbledon. The pride of the St. Gallen prevailed.

It was not to be for Belinda Bencic again: After 2015 and 2018, the round of 16 in Wimbledon was the end of the season this year. The 26-year-old is still waiting for a coup at her favorite Grand Slam.

Nevertheless: 3 games won and a courageous performance against the world number 1 Iga Swiatek in the 4th round give hope for the continuation of the season. Especially because the preparation for Wimbledon was anything but normal.

She was proud of her performance, Bencic said in an SRF interview after the game. “I can get a lot out of this match.” She didn’t want to mourn the loss of two match balls in the second round, also because Swiatek played brilliantly on the important points. “I can’t blame myself and would do it again with the match balls.”

I want to finish the year in the top 8 and get to the Masters.

Bencic was struggling with injuries beforehand and was unable to play a tournament on the green before Wimbledon. Arms and shoulders were also bandaged during the tournament. She now wants to allow herself a few days of rest so that she can then attack with full force again. “I have to digest everything first.”

The St. Galler will not run out of goals. “The second half of the season will be very important for me. I want to end the year in the top 8 and reach the Masters, »said Bencic combatively.
