Dermanostic in the podcast “So techt Germany”: An app for intimate and other skin diseases

Beiersdorf’s entry was the highlight of the past year for Dermanostic co-founder Estefanía Lang. In addition, 40,000 patients have uploaded photos of rashes and spots to receive digital advice from general practitioners. A success that overwhelms the team.

For Estefanía Lang, joining Beiersdorf was the highlight of the past year. The cosmetics group has invested two million euros in Dermanostic. It’s a good combination, says the dermatologist in the ntv podcast “So techt Germany”. The doctors would have complete freedom of therapy. It’s not like “we now only prescribe Beiersdorf products,” she promises. “We are passionate dermatologists,” says Lang, and laughs.

Passionate dermatologists with success: Lang, her husband and a couple of doctors who are friends are currently revolutionizing the detection of skin diseases. They only founded Dermanostic in 2019, launched their app a year ago and in 2021 already reported 40,000 customers who were treated with it.

Several doctors are now employed who view and review hundreds of images of moles, rashes, and other suspicious-looking spots every day. An effort that is already becoming too great. Therefore, artificial intelligence (AI) is also in the starting blocks at Dermanostic.

Men use the offer extensively

“We’re not using the AI yet, but we’re programming it ourselves,” explains Lang. Open databases with images are used for training, and for good reason: With Google, a really big player is currently entering the market with a similar product. There is only one difference, says dermatologist Lang: Doctors no longer look at the pictures on Google. Three photos, indication of the symptoms and there is already a result – a concept that does not convince the doctor. “What does the German do when the AI says it could be 70 percent cancer?” Lang asks and gives the answer right away. There is no black or white, you need a combination of analogue and digital.

However, the digital diagnosis of skin diseases has long since proven its worth, even in surprising areas. “We see that male patients in particular send pictures of their private parts,” reveals Lang. For many, that is obviously more pleasant than going to the local dermatologist and meeting the neighbor there, who then wonders what they are doing there, says the doctor and laughs. It has been shown: “The digital possibilities lower the inhibition threshold, sexually transmitted skin diseases are discovered more quickly.”

Estefanía Lang explains in the new episode of “So techt Deutschland” how an AI can support the dermatologist in the country in the diagnosis and what is important with an artificial intelligence for skin diseases.
