Désinfox No, vaccines against Covid-19 do not cause AIDS (or other diseases)

Always the same text, massively disseminated in several languages depending on the country, by anti-vaccine activists or conspiracy sites:

Examples include the one attributed to “Dr. Elizabeth Eads”, an osteopath from Florida:

WARNING: The numbers are frightening… Millions of triple-vaccinated people catch AIDS! Stop getting vaccinated… The results are CATASTROPHIC!!! – Dr. Elizabeth Eads

In one week, this post from a French-speaking conspiracy site has been shared hundreds of times on Facebook alone. However, hundreds of sites broadcast it in turn, regularly…

More than a year after the launch of the Covid-19 vaccination, these claims that vaccines destroy the immune system and even lead to diseases – such as AIDS – are multiplying.

Old allegations

It must be said that this theory is even older than the Covid itself: the anti-vaccine sphere is very fond of the idea that vaccination would weaken the body, by not allowing it to react “naturally” to infections.

However, scientists point out that it is exactly the opposite that happens with vaccination: the vaccine is a kind of “decoy” for the immune system, and stimulates it to react better and faster when it encounters a pathogen. .

The same goes for anti-Covid-19 vaccines – even if the technique used, that of messenger RNA, is different from “classic” vaccines.

Vaccines have no impact on natural immunity, since they rely on the immune system to complement innate immunity with acquired immunity

Michel Moutschen, professor in immunopathology

‘No way’ for vaccine to weaken immune system

For this reason, “there is no way that vaccinations weaken the immune system”, abounds Srđa Janković, immunologist at the Belgrade Children’s Hospital.

And even less that they “destroy” it in the long term, added Maja Stanojevic, virologist at the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology in Belgrade and consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The safety of vaccines is closely monitored by the WHO and the European Medicines Agency: any adverse effects occurring after the administration of a vaccine must be investigated.

In France, the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) also monitors vaccines against Covid-19 and publishes regular safety updates on vaccines.

Anyone can report an adverse reaction

Contrary to popular belief, anyone can, very simply, report any adverse event on the dedicated ANSM website: this is not reserved for healthcare professionals who, as we sometimes read, “omit” to report it. do, or would “not have the time”.

But based on the idea that vaccines destroy the immune system, anti-vaccines go further: some now claim that they cause AIDS.

AIDS, or ‘acquired human immunodeficiency syndrome’, is caused by a virus – HIV. It is not the consequence of a weakening of the immune system, but its cause.

On the other hand, immunocompromised people, including AIDS patients, are more vulnerable to infections and must therefore be vaccinated as a priority: in fact, in them the virus – that of Covid-19 like the others – poses much more risks.

These patients even require more frequent vaccination, which will however protect them less well: their immune system being deficient, it is more difficult to stimulate.

Bad translation

Among the texts circulating, one of them mentions a “similar report published last week by the British government which also points to the triple vaccine against AIDS”.

After verification, it is… a bad translation of an English sentence, actually present in a document issued by the British authorities.

Correctly translated, it says that there is “a similar note published last week by the British government which also shows that triple vaccinated people catch AIDS”.

A meaning that has nothing to do with what the anti-vaxxers claimed to understand: the British authorities do not claim that triple vaccinated people are more likely to be infected, but the reverse:

The efficacy of vaccines against symptomatic forms of the disease with the Omicron variant is markedly lower than against the Delta variant, with a rapid decline. However, protection against hospitalizations remains high, especially after three doses

The British health agency

Publications linking vaccine and AIDS also sometimes report an increased risk of suffering from cancer.

Here again, no scientific or empirical element allows such an allegation. On the other hand, it has been demonstrated for several months, without the mechanisms being yet well understood, that infection with Sars-Cov-2 causes an increased risk of suffering from a number of pathologies – even premature death.

On the other hand, due to the pandemic and disruptions to health systems in many countries, some cancer diagnoses, in particular, may have been delayed.
