Despite an emergency airbag – an experienced freerider dies in a powerful avalanche

When the second skier drove down the slope, a huge slab of snow came loose at the top end and swept the man away. He was able to deploy the airbag in his backpack before he was completely buried by the masses of snow. After the avalanche had stopped, the other winter sports enthusiasts were able to locate the buried person two meters below the surface using a probe. After about 10 minutes of digging, they came across the 43-year-old. At this point in time, the first rescue workers – a total of 21 people from the mountain rescue centers Dalaas/Braz, Klösterle, Lech with five avalanche dogs and helicopter crews from “Gallus 1”, “Wucher 1” and “Libelle Vorarlberg” – arrived in the accident area.
