Despite Windows 11’s insistence, Edge remains very small compared to Chrome

Despite Microsoft’s best efforts, its Web browser Edge home has to settle for second place, far behind Google Chrome.

If Windows 11 has a tendency to force around Edge, Microsoft’s browser has, according to Statcounter gained only a measly two percent market share in this segment in 2022.

In its latest monthly report focusing on the whole of 2022, the analysis tool Statcounter reported on the web browser market share landscape. And unsurprisingly, Chrome dominates virtually unchallenged.

We can see in the graph above that the Google browser totally outclasses its competitors with 66% market share, and this relatively stable throughout the year. Far behind, we find Microsoft Edge in second place with 11% market share. The browser is neck and neck with Firefox and Safari, dedicated to Apple’s ecosystem.

At the very bottom of the food chain is Opera at 3% market share, along with other browsers conglomerated by Statcounter. In fact, the analysis of the site is not perfectly accurate, based on a very large sample but which is not entirely representative of reality.

Calls from Microsoft’s foot that do not take

However, it is not the will of Microsoft that is missing to rally users to the cause of Edge. Windows 11 has also distinguished itself on this point, even going so far as to impose the Redmond firm’s in-house browser via methods that are not necessarily pro-users.

However, Microsoft Edge is, still according to Statcounter, the browser that has experienced the best growth over the past two years. Between January 2020 and December 2022, it went from just 2% market share to 11%.

Commendable figures, which however pale in comparison to the Chrome juggernaut, having maintained between 65 and 70% of shares between 2020 and 2022. The road is therefore still long for the Microsoft browser, which still manages to come out the head of the water, unlike its direct competitors whose shares are experiencing a slow decline.
